MESSAGE FROM FALAN

Dear colleagues,

We are delighted to announce the 3rd Congress of the Federation of Latin American and Caribbean Neuroscience Societies (FALAN) and the XLIII Congress of the Brazilian Society for Neuroscience and Behavior (SBNeC), which will take place in the Hangar Convention and Fair Center of Amazon in Belém City, Pará, Brazil, from September the 11th to the 14th 2022.

This Congress will bring the most important updates, innovations and discussions through the participation of all invited speakers that will give their contributions to each one of us. Outstanding speakers as Edvard Moser (Medicine & Physiology Nobel Prize Laureate, 2014), Tracy Bale (Director of the Center for Epigenetic Research in Child Health & Brain Development – CERCH), Rommy Von Bernhardi (Dean Faculty for Health Sciences – University of San Sebastian, Chile), and many others are confirmed!

We expect to bring together approximately 2500 participants in the field of Neuroscience. The meeting will feature symposia, national and international lectures, and approximately 900 poster presentations in a vast diversity of subjects within Neuroscience. The International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) Latin American Regional Committee (LARC) is providing strong support.

FALAN 2022 will be held in a hybrid format but we encourage you to make all efforts to participate in person and enjoy all the beauty of the Historic City of Belém do Pará which is the main gate to the Brazilian Amazon and it is also well known abroad for the rich culture and creative gastronomy.

We look forward to seeing you to share and enjoy an excellent scientific and cultural program!

MESSAGE FROM SBNeC

Dear Colleagues

Brazil was the country chosen to host the third edition of the Latin American Congress on Neuroscience and Behaviour, promoted by the Federation of Latin American and Caribbean Societies of Neuroscience and Behaviour and the Brazilian Society of Neuroscience and Behaviour, entities whose mission is to promote the development and scientific improvement of these areas of knowledge.

Since its first edition, the meetings of FALAN have been the stage for discussions of these innovations, and its main characteristic is to be at the forefront to promote growth, technological innovation and especially the training of all professionals involved, whether scientists, researchers or health professionals. Above all, we want to reach undergraduate and graduate students, the future of Neuroscience in our continent.

With a scientific program designed to include all professional segments and interests, we seek to achieve the mission of generating and promoting the exchange of knowledge.

Our partners, technology supplying companies, pharmaceutical industry, products and services necessary to evolve in the accomplishment of researches, are fundamental for the success of this event and we hope they bring the best to build together a future of solutions and innovations.

Climate
The rain is a routine here, but at the same time, the sun will continue to “roar”! So wear light clothes for when you’re on the street, not forgetting that indoors are all very cool, so a sweater in the bag comes in handy! We also have our foggy days of 23 ° C. For us it is the real “Amazonian winter”, but in September it will be difficult to experience this season.

The equatorial climate definitely gets heavy, so sunscreen and an umbrella are basic items. Depending on the tour you want to do, such as the Emílio Goeldi Museum, Bosque Rodrigues Alves or Utinga State Park, it is good to have a repellent on hand, but don’t worry, there are many pharmacies where you can buy these items.

Gastronomy
Belém still offers a range of flavors and sensations. The gastronomy, with indigenous, African and European influences, brings tastes that you can not miss, with dishes prepared with roots and leaves of the earth, fish from our rivers, spices and fruits in abundance. Açaí, so well-known nationally, here has its own way of being consumed and, for sure, you will have to taste it. Jambu and tucupi are other unmissable flavors. Find out more on the “Here you eat well” page.

Culture
When you go around a corner, you can “stumble” in the rhythm of tecnobrega coming out of some iron mouth or a bikesom, go to a dance of nostalgia to hear the striking or “hit there in” in Icoaraci for a round of Carimbó in Negro things. We also have “treme”, calypso, guitarrada, lundu, siriá, among other rhythms, which we hope you will have the opportunity to hear and dance.

Our greatest religious manifestation is Christian, but very syncretic, the Círio de Nazaré. In addition to this which is the largest street procession in the world, we are blessed with a plurality of religious expressions: we have a great legacy of religions of African origin and we were still the first Jewish community in the Amazon and Brazil Republic. We also have strong spiritist, messianic, and Neo Pentecostal representation, among many others.

In literature, you can know the story of the dolphin that waltzes out the door with the owner of the party at “Baile do Judeu”, by Inglês de Souza; the tale of the professor nervous and worried about the heat, because perhaps he will meet Clarice Lispector at the Hotel Central, as imagined by Maria Lúcia Medeiros; travels from Marajó to Belém through the saga of the “North end” of Dalcídio Jurandir; and is dazzled by Max Martins’ modern poetry.

In our mythical narratives, you will learn about the girl in the taxi, who goes down to the Soledade cemetery, from the hauntings, which we call visions here, and you will also learn about the enchanted ones who “live” in the rivers and came to Belém. You will hear about Iara, Matinta and Vitória-Régia and so many other stories and beliefs, such as the intriguing cult of souls.

In 2020, the headquarters of FALAN is the city of Belém do Pará. It will be a unique opportunity for you to get to know this city rich in history and culture, with more than 400 years old and a population of about one million and 500 thousand people. Know a little more about the city that offers unique experiences to its visitors.

A little of history
The capital of Pará was founded on January 12, 1616, in northern Brazil. The “city of Mangueiras”, as it is also known, stands out for its plurality, which can be seen in the music, cuisine, culture, sights and popular events that provide the most diverse opportunities and experiences.

Upon arriving in Belém, you will notice that the city combines the characteristics of a metropolis with the typical charm of cities that are far from large centers. The flow of water, people, streets and forests takes us to historical tracks from its 403 years, combining the imaginary about the Amazon and the reality that can only be known when experienced.

In this “dark city”, there are cultural and architectural collections that communicate the history of Pará and the region, in addition to narrating the marks of European colonization. You can pass through 17th century architecture in the Feliz Lusitânia complex, seeing examples of Art Nouveau unique in the country. You will “hear” the echoes of modernism in the North with the “Raio que parta” architecture and, of course, encounter contemporary elements, such as the Estação das Docas.

ATTENTION
We are providing below a list of budget hotels in the metropolitan region of Belém do Pará .. We emphasize that consultations, reservation requests and payments must be made directly by the congressman at the hotels informed, and it is not the responsibility of the organizing company, the organizing committee and the agency of official travel any situation arising from reservations with them.
